On October 14, 2025 UK’s Home Office announced a change in post-study work (PSW) visa rules through Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules. This update aimed to strengthen the link between international graduates and the country’s economic needs. The UK PSW update mainly affects the duration of stay of new graduates and language requirements for future work visa applicants.

Graduate Route: Shorter Duration for Most Graduates

The two-year stay period for the Graduate Post-study Work visa will be shortened to 18 months from January 1, 2027. This is for students completing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. This new adjustment will apply only to new applications submitted on or after that date (January 1, 2027).

With that said, graduates with a PhD or any doctoral qualification will continue to receive a three-year PSW visa. There won’t be any changes to their current provisions.

The government explained the reason behind such a decision. They explained, based on data, many graduates on the current route are not moving into graduate-level employment as intended. The revised duration aims to ensure that those who remain in the UK contribute meaningfully to the workforce and the broader economy.

Note: Current Graduate visa holders will not be affected by these changes.

Other Key Immigration Updates

Alongside the Graduate Route revision, several other immigration policy changes have been announced:

  • English Language Requirement: From January 8, 2026, applicants for work visas such as the Skilled Worker, Scale-up, and High Potential Individual visas will face a higher English proficiency requirement. The required level will increase from the current B1 standard to B2.
  • Skilled Worker Visa Eligibility: The list of eligible occupations for the Skilled Worker visa is undergoing review. There are already some changes effective from July 22, 2025, and further updates are expected.
  • Immigration Skills Charge: The government plans to increase the immigration skills charge. The proposal is moving through parliamentary approval soon.
  • Family Visas: By the end of 2025, a new framework for family visas is anticipated to be implemented.

Summary

The changes announced are to mark a strategic shift in the UK’s immigration system. This focuses on aligning post-study opportunities with the nation’s labor market priorities. The new regulations shorten the post-study stay for the majority of graduates. Additionally, they also strengthen the UK's efforts to draw in talented foreign workers who will boost its economy.
